Now, a new documentary portrays the rise and ongoing struggles of hip-hop's first empire.

Of Mics and Men is probably the most elegantly told and worthwhile portrait of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, a.k.a. Rusty Jones, the irascible, pulsing heart of the Wu, that I’ve seen. By turns frenetic and open-hearted, rambunctious and inspired, ODB was often portrayed in his time as the Wu’s court jester, an unpredictable force seeking some inscrutable object. He was more than that—not just a dynamic vessel for RZA’s musical vision, but an ecstatically spiritual type. He sang with a weird broken ferocity that was one part Teddy Pendergrass and one part Tom Waits.
For the first five years, everything went according to plan. The first solo albums from Ghost, Rae, Meth, GZA, and ODB — all classics. And then, one day, it ground to a halt.
If you ran out to buy Wu-Tang Forever the day it dropped, the initial dread at unpacking the huge double album may have translated as disappointment. It was almost 30 tracks, some of them with nine verses, and "Triumph" didn’t even show up until disc two.
